Mirage of the Mind

Being with you allowed me to believe romance could be,
If only from a distance,
Yet within each capsule of time and emotion
Breathed a yearning for more,
But why did you keep that away from me?
Always at arm's length and plainly in view
I would salivate as those promises stacked up so deliciously,
Each one on top of the other, just so
and yet I could never reach,
I could never get close, any closer than this ...

In fact now, as I sit here and reminisce
I am convinced of only one thing,
Which explains everything,
We must have stumbled onto a mirage,
A mirage of the mind in that alternate world
and for a while we were consumed with that love,
Peeking out, so demure ~ but from one heart, not two
Streams of blue, look how this flows!
Into nothing more than a sieve,
A scene in a dream or was that real?

Maybe we never had a chance
If it's all about reception
and we could never get close,
The string does unravel
and lead to a note,

Excitement punched the air around us
Screaming with delight as we sailed far beyond twilight,
Surrounded by enticement and promises yet seen
and I just knew we'd be together, forever
I began planning my days all around you,
Nothing else mattered and no one else dared,
So perfect we were, heaven unearthed
All my dreams at long last had come true,
I lived in a state of perpetual ecstasy
My life was complete,
I had you ...

Then suddenly, ripped from my world
Without warning, I found myself alone
and in my head, lingering still
Were these words of great romance waiting to be shared,
Now, they just sit there and stare into space
Vowels dropping and consonants slipping
Fell to the floor, stunned
And that's where I found them, today ...

If all I have left are only words
I will gather them close and tenderly remember ...

This Thing Called Love

Something slipped that day
Maybe it was in the way she pulled back her hair,
It wasn't quite right,
I sat on the sidelines away from the crowd
A silent observer, I was,
I didn't miss a thing, tho'
and watched it all play out right before my eyes,
It almost seemed scripted, somehow
So predictable was each move and response,
Conversations and nuance, I felt like I'd been there before ...

Funny how there's nothing new under the sun
Day follows night as the seasons line up,
One after the other, never out of turn
Springtime, Summer then Fall just before Winter,
I wondered if they were actually metaphors, perhaps
A clue from the universe or subliminal hint,
And the only ones not listening
As we fight against the grain
With our constant uphill battles,
Are us humans with our superior brains,
Yet, with all our advantages and abilities to think
Learn from mistakes and move on,
If we're really so much smarter than the animals and birds
Then why is it, we still mess everything up?
Especially, this thing called love ...

I, the priestess watch outside that shrouded veil
With portentous will and snickering shrills,
Exhaling sorrow into their worlds
Quietly now, I have to laugh and roll,
Keep my hand close, won't let this slip away
Can’t let those poor souls know,
They’ve sought the answer to their questions
From the Oracle of Apollo ...

It was in the winter of her love for him
When summer died in autumn's arms,
Spring was lingering on life support

The morning chill coughed and wheezed
and wrapped around dawn's sleepy daylight
Just a little tighter,
Peeking through those misty shadows
The stars above lost their places, one by one
and fell confounded, somehow
Fumbling there, on that sea of blue
So unlike before, near heaven's door,
When strung across that midnight sky
In dazzling radiance, forevermore...

Where did summer go? Is autumn next?
How can we really know what to expect,
Won't you take my hand while we pray
For spring's release,
We'll watch those embers glow ...

You've brought to my life, splashes of true happiness
When we ran to the edge of those misunderstood precepts,
and lingered there for a time beyond time,
Each key you presented burst forth from the darkness
Relieved at long last, back in marvelous light,
We marveled at their radiance, bathed in prism's glow
Smashed every false pretense writhing in confusion,
Joyously, we kicked them away ...

My life is sweeter now, thanks to you
You taught me to feel with my soul,
To break free from old shackles
Put an end to sick contradictions
And learn how to breathe and just be,
With eyes of tendernes, you led me
With arms of compassion, you held me so close,
When my steps were mistaken, you stood right beside me
and together, we found our way,
Through those dark days of thunder
and whirlwinds of winter
When confusion and doubt tried to drown me,
When my world was dark and miserably silent

How could there ever be another?
